Putting this out there for any Merc 4.3 owners who want to make the oil filter change process a breeze.

2008 Chaparral SSi 190 with the 190HP 4.3 engine. Couldn't reach the oil filter because of its location and the design of the back of the boat encasing the back half of the engine. Laying on top of the engine from starboard to port I could jam myself in pretty good but didn't have enough leverage. I figured that if I have to disassemble the back bench to change the filter I'll put in a remote filter kit and be done with it.

Decided against the $350 Mercruiser remote filter kit for my 10 year old boat, and opted instead for the Derale 15717 from Jegs for $40. Bought a couple of iron pipe 90 degree elbows and two nipples of different lengths (see the photo) so I could have a bend where the hoses enter the filter housing. You need the different length in order to properly tighten the second pipe fitting you screw in.
On the motor end used the stock set up as the hoses came up from the bottom nicely.
Marked each end with a Sharpie so I put it together the right way. Filled engine with oil (and filter with a some oil before installing that), ran it and checked for leaks.

Located the filter in a spot where now I raise the sun pad, kneel on the back bench, lift a rear compartment panel and can access it by hand with no tools. room for a bucket underneath to catch the spills when changing.
It takes a larger filter, and there is oil in the hoses, so the motor now takes a bit more oil than stock. Not a bad thing. Just pay attention to the dipstick.

Howdy Jack!

Nice Job!! :thumb:

My only criticism might be to lose the "black" iron pipe fittings and switch to brass, stainless steel or even aluminum........ Iron will become a rusty mess in no time (and they're really tacky!!.... ;);) )

Cheers,

Rick

In addition ro Ricks comment, use Wix filters vs the Fram you have. Fram uses a cardboard inner tube with a really low psi rating before failure where Wix uses metal, and has a really high pressure rating, not to mention a much better filter media

I see an issue with the hose, that looks like heater hose.

Edit: probably isn't but sure looks like it

The iron pipe can't actually be seen, so I don't care about the appearance of it. The boat is trailered not moored so the exposure to salt air is minimal.

As for the comment about the hose, it's what is shipped with the kit. I'm confident the manufacturer is supplying the proper quality materials.

I'll note that for next seasons filter change. Thanks.

Could this be done on my Mercruiser 5.0L? I hate getting at my filter where it is now. The engine has to pump the oil through the hoses, that doesn't matter?

Not at all. The guys with the big boats and the multiple motors have them from the factory. Guys like us with the 'little' bow riders are stuck being contortionists to change the oil filter!

Merc even has a kit that you can buy on Amazon for $340.

I'm sure its good, they wouldn't have sold it as a kit. Should have looked a bit deeper before I commented.

I like it, and remote filter is always the way to go on a bot, unless its "real" easy to get to the filter, but hey what's easy about a boat :thumb:

Unfortunately, this is one of those projects that is not a visible upgrade to the crew and the Admiral, it's only appreciated by the mechanic (me)!

This is a great idea. I already have an email into the Derale people; hopefully they can tell me exactly what kit to buy. Next fall will be the last time I'll have to stand on my head to remove that slimy filter!

BTW, you can install the filter facing up instead of down. Do it this way, punch a hole in the top, give it some time (20 to 30 minutes) and very little oil comes out. There will still be some, but not that much

+1 on that!
It makes it easy, especially when you tear a spill pad into a few strips and wrap it around the mount. In the time it takes to get out of the boat and drop the gear oil, that filter has mostly drained.
The new ones mount the filter in a recess with a slot (rather than a flat plate) so you can catch that oil.

Derale is simply re-branded Transdapt parts.

the parts still say Transdapt.

Transdapt a brand name in the Hedman Performance Group along with Hamburger, Hedman Headers, etc. Derale is a house of re-branded components.

I've been thinking of installing one of these for years but I can still get myself into position to remove the filter on my '88 OMC by removing half of the rear seat and pushing the battery back on that side. I have read in the past that due to the vibration common in marine engines and also the higher oil pressures you see running at high rpms for extended periods you should use Marine rated hose and fittings and that using regular hose clamps may fail. That would be a catastrophic event loosing nearly all the oil at once. Anyone care to comment, using a more expensive marine set up vs an auto set up?

I'm using 1000 psi rated hydraulic hoses, however I am a bit of a belt and suspenders guy

attach10510662.jpg

for a typical run-about, standard hoses would be fine. if they were push-to-connect hoses, I would have been worried about the hose clamps

Just make sure you don't get the hoses hooked up backwards, the check valve in the filter works very well and you will end up with no filtering of the oil. Happened on mine when the dealer installed a remote filter on my engine when I purchased the boat. 100 hrs later, it sounded like it had mechanical lifters. A new VP long block was the fix, at no cost to me
