I have a new 24' boat with a Yamaha 225 four stroke. The boat came with one battery but has a guest switch and pos. lead to add another battery. What would be my best choice to run my accessories. Stereo, bilge livewell, fishfinder and possibly a trolling motor. If the answer is a deep cycle, would this 2nd battery also have the power to start my motor if battery one failed? If the answer is no, then what are your suggestions?

A 24' boat is going to require at least 24V and most likely a 36V motor to push it, especially if you have to deal with winds or currents. So you don't need to worry about that in your planning for the house battery.

The choice of battery is going to depend on how much you plan on running the stereo and livewell with the motor off. If you will use them, go with the deep cycle. Otherwise, it really doesn't matter. The other things you talk about are not big draws of power.

The deep cycle, assuming it hasn't been discharged too much by the stereo and livewell, should be able to start the motor.

i have 1 deep cycle in my boat and i use it for cranking(auto store gave me wrong batt and i didnt notice... my bad) but it works fine for cranking the motor. shouldn't have a problem as long as u dont run the stereo too long on it before cranking :)

I agree, a deep cell can be used as a back up starter battery.

Does it matter if you have a 27 battery as your starter and a 24 as your house battery? Will this cause any issues when setting the switch to "both?"

I would say pick up a 27 size deep cycle marine/RV battery it will give you the most battery life for your accesories and should still be able to crank the motor if you need a back up. My boat has one 24 size deep cycle for cranking/bilge/livewell/fishfinder, and I just picked up a 27 size deep cycle for my 12v trolling motor. I normally only have to charge the 24 every couple of times I go out.

Thanks BigJ08,
I have a 27 currently as a starter, and just bought a 24. I may take the 24 back and get a 27.
