feel free to move if in the wrong section........

for osme od reason my boat does not drain water properly. the stringer right below the front motor mount is solid and water can not pass through to the bilge pumpor the bilge drain. after a rain i have to put a spait bilge pump infront of that stringer to pump the extra water out and let it drain out the back of the boat (boat sits on trailer for right now). To fix this issue and not have to worrie about it again i am going to mount a bilge bump with float switch in front of this stringer. i want to run a hose to a thru hull connection to pump that water right out (like the main bilge pump). now for the question

The thru hull i have sys 3/4 in on it. i am assuming that is for the hose connection and i i measured the inside of the plastic nut and it was a little bigger then 1 inch. would a 1 inch drill bit work for this?

what kind of precautions should i take before drilling into the jell coat/fiberglass on the transome?
will any ol bit work? what about using a butterfly bit?

after hole is drilled should i put 5200 around it to seal it back off?

any other thought or concerns would ber greatly appreciated and many thanks

Ayuh,... The fitting is probably 1, 1/8"...
It'll be danm hard to stuff a fitting through a hole that ain't big enough...

Why not just drill a limber hole through the motor mount, so it can flow aft, the way it's supposed too,..??

Re: adding a 2nd thru hull

my theory on doing it this way is......if something happens then i have 2 pumps to help take care of the issue. i have already bought the thru hull, the switch, and the pump

that plus i am concerned that if i dont get that stringer (which is trick to get down to in a position that i can hold long enought to drill through) sealed up right it will rott out faster then can all i can shake a stick at . i can get to the transome of the boat a lot easier and would be easier to seal it up

Can you get a hose from "the new pump" to somewhere reasonable? Where is the water coming from? How old is this boat? There are alot ways around just drilling more to get more water out!

That would be 3/4 pipe, 3/4 being the I/D. Use a 1" hole saw to drill and you may have to clean it out a bit with a file to get a good fit. After you have the pilot hole drilled put the dill in reverse and start the hole saw through the gelcoat to avoid chipping. Apply 5200 to the flange side of the fitting. You may also want to but a rubber gasket under the nut to cushion against the hull when tightening.

Rubber gaskets are a no-no. They dry-rot and you can guarantee you'll have a leak

Re: adding a 2nd thru hull

the boat is 1988. the water is coming from rain. rigfht now the boat sits on trailer but in very near future will be sitting in my dock. i have not found a differant route to go with the water. this is just a percautionary pump and will be used to pump the water out when it rains then all i have to do is turn the mail bilge and get a little out that way.....

thanks for the hole saw i didnt think of that....sounds like a trip to menards as we dont have a home depo around here thanks again

Yes I should have been more specific, not a piece of old boot rubber but something that will not degrade, rot or otherwise disappear. A modern gasket material such as Teflon, EPDM. It's not intended for sealing, the 5200 will cover that, just a cushioning against the fiberglass.
