Hi,
We are considering purchasing a used boat with the 03 VP 5.7 280hp engine with DP drive. It's a 26ft cruiser and it does not have a fuel consumption / trip computer. How difficult would it be to add the EVD or similar computer that measures fuel economy?

We would have to do it through a dealer so approximate cost is appreciated.

Also - would you recommend getting it through EVD or through the GPS/Chartplotter device?

Thanks!

you can add a flow meter, just not one thats going to read from the ECU on that engine.
you can add the EVC to an MPI motor but the cost will be 3000 dollars or better.
if ya really want to spend coins it ,if its an MPI engine, can be converted to ETC.
however affordable flow meter kits are avalible aftermarket.

Not looking to reinvent the wheel or modify the engine, just add a fuel flow/consumption computer as the prices of fuel are very high where we boat!

The boat also comes with a Northstar chartplotter that is supposed to have an $80 part that can read this information.

What would be the appropriate labor to add such a part to the engine? (ballpark)

Thanks!

Look into NMEA 2000 Networking. Your Northstar system probaly can connect to fuel flow sensors...

My boat came with Lowrance GPS. I upgraded to a small plotter that can drive the network:

The fuel flow system I plan to install connects to the network in a simple way...

You need to spend some time researching...there are a few options out there, some more $$$ than others.

when I think of EVC by Volvo, I think of electronic steering and joystick controls, etc,...BIG BUCKS!

-Good luck.
