Adding a Floor

I just signed up and have found a lot of good info on this forum, but I still have a few questions. Let me start of by saying that all I know about boats is that they are general supposed to float other than that I'm very new to this topic. I know this topic has been covered extensively but I"m going to ask anyways.:) I am going to take delivery on a brand new (in the early 70's) 16' aluminum lund boat. Right now the boat is in rough shape but for the price I think it was deal. It has no floor in it and as far as I know it never did. I would like to add a floor and maybe remove some seats. It has the metal bench seats like most of these do. It also has basically a piece of sheet aluminum over the bow. I was told that this is for "decoration" but I don't know if I buy that. So here are my questions.

1. What is the best way to add a floor to an aluminum boat starting from scratch? I have two ideas. Just put 2x4's on running on the bottom and put plywood on top of that. The second idea. I have an uncle that is a professional welder that I think would be willing to do me a favor and I thought about welding up some tube aluminum and making ribs out of that to attach the plywood too. Just not sure which is better. If I do the metal option I would think that I could weld the ribs I have made right to the hull, but how do I attach the wood? Does it just sit freely on the bottom of the boat and the plywood hold it together?

2. Can I remove a seat or two? I'm under the impression that they are a key support member to the boat. Is that true? Does anyone see an issue with taking the middle seat out? If so I was thinking about having my uncle weld me up a frame that replaces the structure of the seat but goes under the floor to reinforce the hull.

3. I would like to remove that piece of alumn. over the bow of the boat. I would really like to be able to put a higher floor there to stand on to fish. Is this a key structural element or just there for looks? Again, if its structural I could have a frame made to take its place.

There is a very good chance I'm thinking about doing this the really hard way. That's how I seem to do everything. Again, I have no idea what the heck I'm doing so go easy on me:)

Thanks
Josh

Re: Adding a Floor

Welcome to the forum.

Quick answers:
1. You want to go as light as possible. Aluminum stringers would be best.
2. The bench seats are support. Do not remove without supporting otherwise.
3. May or may not be support. Post pictures.

Other tips:
- Search the forums. Everything you are asking about has been done, in many different ways.
- Post pictures.

The group here is a wealth of knowledge and advice, enjoy!

Re: Adding a Floor

Thanks for the replys. I'm starting to read that one thread. Man thats long. I have attached a picture of the piece on the bow I was referring too. So I'm thinking about putting a floor in about 4" deep. So My thought is that I could run a alumn. under the floor and up the side for support. Do you all think that would work?

Re: Adding a Floor

thats one heck of a job he did on that boat....and it has enough ideas that you can realize it is your boat and you can do anything you want to it.....

your idea of a deck above a stringer system will do well.....hou just have to keep in mind....thet the higher the deck...the more tendancy for it to tip....

you want the deck quite low in the boat......(casting decks are a different story)

Do you think it would be ok to remove that top part from the bow? I'm not sure if that is fancy decoration or structural support.

Re: Adding a Floor

Well i read just about ever post in that link provided. Some really good stuff and i'm really impressed by the amount of work that guy did. I'm guessing that I'm not going to go into that much detail. I picked up this boat for what I think is a good price and I'm not really looking to put a ton of money into it. That being said everyone know how that goes.:) What I was thinking I might like to do is take out all the seat and put in pedestal style seats. I know that the bench seats are the structure but I am think that I might be able to get my uncle to make me some supports to go in place of the seats. I'm excited to get going on this project. This forum seem like a great place to learn how to do this stuff. Right now I dont have a trailer so I'm wondering what the best way to support this think is while i'm working on it? Any thoughts?

Re: Adding a Floor

So if I remove the seats and build an alumn. frame to go in its place how do i get the seats out? They are riveted through the side of the hull right? Can I drill them out? Then how do I plug the hole in the side? I could just cut the seat out and bend over the left over alumn. Any thoughts on the metal in the bow? Is it ok to remove? Do I have to reinforce if I do? Does anyone know how hard it is to find a new rail that runs around the top of the boat? Its sort of banged up.

Re: Adding a Floor

So I just talked to my uncle. Apparently his work no longer does alumn. welding so they sold their welder. New Plan. What if I cut the middle of the middle seat out. Leave it attached at the bottom of the hull and the sides of the hull and basically make a hallway in between the sides. Then I could use the sides of the seat that i cut down as support for my floor. Would this keep enough of the structure of the boat in tact?

I attached a diagram of what I want to do, don't laugh its very crude and quick

Re: Adding a Floor

The seats provide structural strength against inward/outward forces on the sides of the boat. If you remove the middle of the seat without additional bracing, you may compromise this support.

Re: Adding a Floor

Even if I remove only a small section of the seat? Any thought on how to reinforce this?

Thanks!
