Adding a Gas Tank?

I would like to add a permanant gas tank to my 16' Sea Nymph Fishing machine. Since putting on the 50 HP motor the 6 gal portable does not last long. I am replacing the floor/carpet in a couple weeks and while I have every thing off this would be the time to do it. Any thoughts? Has anyone ever done this before?

Thanks,

Rick

Re: Adding a Gas Tank?

It is a lot cheaper to just carry another 6 gal portable, OR get a 12 - 18 gallon above deck tank that straps down.

Otherwise, an under floor tank will run over $150, plus the fill, hoses, fittings, vent, guage and wiring. Think $300 - $400 for a do-it-yourself job for a 18 - 30 gallon tank.

Here is a link to my 14 gallon project. Even though its under the bow, and not the floor, most of it will apply to your project too.

Share A Project: MFG Permanent Gas Tank.

Thanks, I will probably put in a hatch to keep my batteries in and then use the space for another gas tank.

Thanks,

Rick

I would also like to get away from portable tanks. Does anybody know of a manufacturer for custom sized plastic tanks? I'd like to put it in the front bench seat of my boat.

Re: Adding a Gas Tank?

Researched this a few months ago.

Coast guard regs for built-in tanks require fuel supply openings to be on the exterior surface of the boat.

There are also ventilation requirements for compartments containing fuel tanks that vent into the compartment.

Starting on page 30 of this PDF document.
