Adding a tach

I have decided to add a tach to my boat set up. I have a 1996 mariner 9.9 with a comander 2000 controler. This morning I picked up a tach and ordered the plug in cable to run from the shifter control to the consol. I have a print on the hook up and have reserched what the pulse setting should be. Just wondering if I was missing any thing.

Re: Adding a tach

My cable made it in today and I went out to the boat to do a test install before cutting any holes and ran into a problem. The tack needle was around 1500 rpm to start off and after I hooked it and fired up the motor the needle dropped down to 0. According to my motor book its a 8 pole/4 pulse and I had set the scale accordingly and I did try switching it around a few times, but no go. I did read DC voltage 4.5 at idle and it ran up to 7 when I lifted the fast idle leaver. Would I be right thinking the tack its self is bad.

My motor is a 1996 mariner 9.9 with comander 2000 control box.

The charging system if fine I just recently went through it.

Re: Adding a tach

I got it sorted out this morning. Yesterday when I went out to the boat I glanced at the print and saw the black- wire and the gray signal wire as connections and last night I took a closer look and it also needed the purple wire 12 +. Amazing how well it works when you hook up all of the wires

Thanks for letting us know. You certainly aren't the first to make such an oversight, and you certainly won't be the last!
