Re: Adding alternator charger to 1988 70hp
The specs on this charger says a minimum input of 12 amps. Your outboard may have either a 9 amp or a 16 amp stator. if you have a 9 amp stator, definitely not. If your outboard has a 16 amp stator, probably not a good idea. Outboard charging systems only produce maximum amperage at higher rpms, so 1 of 2 things is likely to happen: the charger will detect low amperage input (if it's designed to do so), and refuse to charge your trolling battery, or it will overwork the stator and rectifier/regulator, causing failure. These alternator driven chargers are really designed for outboards with a higher alternator output or inboards / I/Os.
