I've got a Johnson 60HP V-4, model vxl-12r, that didn't come with the generator option to charge batteries, etc. Can I add a rectifier to the coil and convert the power to DC output. I've tried looking for the generator, the price has been very ridiculous for a part that's not warranted.

Thanks

Rob

For a charging system to operate, either a generator or stator (alternator) would be the first thing you would need.

The 1966 VXL12R does not incorporate the alternator system BUT the 1966 VXL12M does. The difference consists of a different "Flywheel" and "Ring Gear", then the addition of a "Stator" (under the flywheel) and the "Rectifier"

Check around the various outboard repair shops. They just might have one of those old 1966 VXL12M 60hp models laying around with a blown powerhead or lower unit that they'll part out.

The original 1966 numbers of the parts needed which may include other year and/or hp models are:

Flywheel: 580645

Ring Gear: 312917

Stator: 580650

Rectifier: 580656

Note that the rectifier listed has the push on plug connectors, is no longer available and listed for a outrageous price of over $150.00.

The present rectifier being used today is the same excepting the connectors which you could modify easily which is part number 583408 (about $40.00). Good luck.

I'm no expert on these charging systems but my guess is the output may be relatively low so if you are thinking of maintaining a trolling motor battery or a huge number of accessories like a speaker system it may be limited.I'm sure Joe can give you an idea what the output is.If you are just operating running lights occasionally and a fish finder and a normal radio and you are worried about starting keep your present starting battery and add a good deepcycle to operate things. And just charge ir after each outing.
