adding cooling fan to dvd player

I have an RCA HTS-1000 DVD player with surround speakers, it always overheats... so tonight I took it apart and the cooling fan clicks on for 2 seconds when the power putton is pushed on, then a faint "click" is heard and the fan stops, like a circuit breaker is clicking.

I can trace the problem and try to fix it, or I can hardwire a couple of CPU case fans to the top and back and be done.

The question is, most cooling fans are 12VDC, where can I find 12VDC? The power supply is a transformer, wires come out of two opposite ends. The 120 VAC power cord comes into the case, and plugs directly onto the circuit board marked AC1 and AC2. Right next to that are two additional plugs, one is marked TR IN and goes to the transformer via blue wires; and the other is marked AC SW and goes to the DVD device.

The transformer has many additional wires. I hope to splice into one and run it to a switch on the case, then to the fan.... any thoughts?

To make the explanation even longer, the clicking sounds appears to be coming from a little black box with MASSUSE ME-1-12BS 12VDC stamped on it. Don't know if this is a circuit breaker... and if it is... is it faulty or is there a problem elsewhere. At this point I would rather find 12 VDC wires, tap into them, add the big fan and be done.

On the secondary side of the transformer you should have a say 18VAC that goes into a rectifier (and circuit) which gives approx 12VDC. That is where I would look. Your on the right track. Most equipment these days runs on 12 VDC. (and analoge 5 VDC) If you dont feel like doing all this just use a $4.00 power supply fan and use a external 110 VAC to 12VDC power supply to run it.
To my disgrace I have done the latter :)
But Im Lazy sometimes ;)

Here's an idea - that MASSUSE ME-1-12BS is a relay. That's an electromechanical switch. It clicks whenever it's turned 'on' or 'off'. Trace the wires from the fans and see if they lead to it. If one of the two wires does, you can simply jumper it with a switch to get the fans to come on.
On page 2, the diagram second from the left shows a bottom view of the relay. Turn the board so it orients the same way as indicated in the diagram, and try jumpering a wire between either of the right-most terminals, and the bottom left terminal.
If you don't want to try this though, I certainly understand. :)

Thank you for the direction and ideas. To see the bottom of the circuit board requires complete disassembly, don't want to go there.

Can't find a diagram of a rectifier to know what it looks like.

I like the power supply fan idea... wonder if radio shack sells 110 VAC fans so I don't need a supply to run it?

Does the secondary side have the four larger wires (two yellow and two blue) or does it have six skinny wires coming (two red, two white, two black) and also two thicker blue ones out of the bottom of that side?

I am wishing I took Electronics in school :(

That relay is right on the board, if I can't find a fan today to try and wire up, I may need to disassemble and access the board bottom, and try the jumper.

Thank you for the info, if anyone else thinks of something don't hesitate to add.
