Have a 1978 25hp johnson. 25R78C. Currently is pull start only and was wanting to add electric start. The flywheel has teeth. I have found several starters with brackets on ebay. I was wondering if this is all i need? I can rig the wiring to the batt. up myself. ANd could i buy some type of switch at lowes or auto store to use for starter button? Thanks in advance

You will need a starter solenoid and bracket. Yes a push button switch can be used from auto parts house etc. These hook up just like an older Ford. I set up a 25 Evenrude as a tiller motor and put a start and a kill button in the front of the hood. The red batt cable hooks to back side of solenoid (large terminal). Then a heavy cable like Batt cable goes from other large solenoid terminal to starter motor. The Black batt cable connects to the block. The smaller solenoid terminal or terminals, whichever, are the primary 12 volt circut for the push button to engage the solenoid. Tims outboard Salvage is a good source for used parts.218 682 2331

What you have planned is the simple way. BUT! you have no way on the engine to charge batt.

Thanks for the quick replies guys! Is the square shaped indenten on the starter side where the solenoid fits into? And you wire the start button from the solenoid to the button?

As I remember, the solenoid goes on the left side as you face the motor. The starter on the right. Some solenoids have only one small terminal and some have 2. I am In CO and my motor is in OK so I can't take a look. If you have a problem hooking up the starter switch, I can have my son look and let me know.
