Adding fuel water separating filter kit

I?m seriously consider adding a fuel water separating kit to my 1991 Glasstream with the 4.3L engine (Carter diaphragm pump).
Couple of things first:
I?m assuming the carter pump will allow for this type filter on the inlet without causing too high of vacuum.
I?m thinking this should be mounted as low and in-line as possible with the inlet tube being spliced.
Anyone have suggestions on optimal mounting placement or things to avoid?
Thanks!

i put one on my 86 the week after i bought it. cheap insurance. put it anywhere you want and keep an extra filter on hand in your boat for emergencies.

That is plumbing wise, not the physical location.
You can attach it to the transom with a hose from the tank to the filter, from the filter to the fuel pump. That is still 'tween the tank, 'n the fuel pump..

Mount it most anywhere back in the transom area, out of the way but still accessible enough to change the cartridges. The Racor folks pretty much wrote the book on fuel filtration but Walmart carries an Attwood Fuel/Water Separater($27) that works fine, I installed one of these several years ago and consider it the best preventive maintenance item so far. If you're installing this yourself you'll need 2 barbs, 2 pipe plugs, hose clamps and some teflon pipe thread sealant....Ace Hardware and other similar places carry these. Good Luck!

On my motor I had a couple of unused threaded hardpoints used in the auto application to mount some linkage assembly or such. It was roughly the same size as the holes used on the filter assembly, so I attatched it directly to the block just below and aft of the pump.

and some teflon pipe thread sealant.

DO NOT use teflon tape on your boat. Save that garbage for your plumbing at home, it has no place on a boat. Use some regular gasket sealer (not adhesive) like the Aviation gasket sealer. NOT teflon tape.
On the barbed fittings, don't get the push-on type hose barbs with the yellow collars on them. The barbs are too deep and tend to cut the inner liner of the hose causing leaks.

Another item that comes to mind, for your enclosed/inboard application the clear plastic filter bowls are not coast guard approved, due to possible cracks/leakage/fire hazards? So you'll need an all metal cartridge. Like mentioned, the white teflon pipe compound in the tube is the correct stuff....that teflon tape can create "hairs" of teflon that can/will plug a fuel system. Good Luck!

I just wanted him to know that there is a difference in "Teflon Pipe Thread Sealant" better know as Pipe thread sealant with teflon. and Teflon Tape.

"Teflon Pipe Thread Sealant" and "Teflon Tape" are the same thing to the unknowing.

One more question. Can remove the stone filter from the carter pump, it's a real pain to change?

Install a new one, then don't worry about it after that. If you use a 10 micron filter element in your water separating fuel filter, only clean fuel will be going to it. BUT, if something should happen to your WSF Filter, the stone one will be a backup to keep dirt out of your carb.
