I've decided after much debate to have my engine re-built (88 gm 4.3l v6). I know a guy who rebuilds both car and boat engines. He told me that he could add 50-60 hp depending on how much $ i wanted to spend.
I was wondering if anyone else has had this done and what the pros/cons were, and if it could actually be done.
any advice would be helpful, i am meeting him tommorow to give him the motor.
thanks....

Re: adding hp

Depending on What you Start with,
50hp is Very Easy...........

210hp to 250 hp is Possible.......

A 4bbl. Carb,+ Vortec Heads will Just About get you there......

I Can't think of Any Problems with having More Power............. :D

Re: adding hp

Yes, it can be done. But first ask yourself if you need the HP. I've got a light aluminum cuddy and can only use the full 190 HP on pretty flat water or end up with a bruised butt.

Re: adding hp

Vortec heads roller rockers and a mild performance marine cam. Check out comp cams.
I have all the suff for mine I am just waitng to pull the motor to do it. My motor is a 1991 and has a weak valve spring or 2.
Rather than rebuild the old crappy TBI heads I bought a set of 4.3 vortec truck heads off ebay for 200 bucks. I already upgraded from the 2bbl to the 4bbl last year and it was good for 4 mph in a 19 foot heavy cuddy cab. I think I might get another ultra reliable 20 hp with the new heads cam and roller rockers.
good luck

Re: adding hp

The Vortec came out in 1996......
And, You'll Need a Vortec Manifold to go with them......
When looking at the Combustion Chamber,
You'll see the Heart Shape..... Vortec...
Also, the Intake face has Only 8 bolt holes....
Exhaust pattern is the Same......

You'll want to go lightly with the Cam.....
Idle to 4500/5000rpms.....
