Looking for advise from fisherman that have added a pony motor to their boats.
I'm running a 251 Proline w/a 200 Mariner out of Quincy Ma.Want to add a smaller outboard to the stern for 2 reasons, one being a back up and the other for trolling. My larger motor has a seperate fill for the motor oil (tcw)and I need some ideas on how to go about this.
Tight Lines
Skinny Duggan

Im not sure but try and check cabela's as I think they have a setup that is what you are looking for. Not sure if the fuel issue will be addressed. I have seen smaller motors mounted off to the port sideof the transom but dont know how it was done. These where like 5hp and under.

There are only 3 options.
Get an oil injected kicker motor.
Use a separate fuel tank.
Or get a four stroke kicker motor.

I've been mulling this over too. Like to have a trolling motor for Lake Ontario.

Seems like there's a number of issues:
1)Mounting
-directly to transom or on mounting plate?
-height/location determined by
---motor shaft length
---steering approach chosen
---and....??
-must take into consideration how motor will be raised when big motor running
-can transom handle the extra weight-
---in water?
---on trailer?
2)Fuel
-will kicker use same fuel as big motor?
-separate tank for kicker?
-tap main tank?
-integral tank on 5HP engines might make them the best solution
3)steering
-tiller
---might not work if motor not clamped to top of transom
-tie kicker to big motor
---what are issues?
4)Raising/supporting kicker for high-speed runs and transport
5)Electrical System (added 10/15/03)
-electric start capability?
---must be in addition to manual start!!
-battery charging capability? (thanx akriverrat)
-if kicker can charge batt. and/or be started electrically, can it be paralleled with big motor on starting battery?
---kicker ground MUST be compatible with big motor ground to avoid shorting out battery

Probably making too big a deal of this, but hate to spend money twice. The best approach to finding an answer might be to hang around launch ramps and see what folks are doing on boats similar to yours. Simpler approaches are always better.

Will be watching this thread.
Bob

keep in mind that bad fuel stops both engines if on same fuel supply. when i added mine i made sure it could charge a battery. got main engine restarted twice so far that way.

I used to have an automatic oil mixer. Sold it because my Suzuki wants 100:1 but the mixer made 50:1. Plumb the big motor straight to the gas tank and the little one to the mixer. Better yet (in case of bad fuel), get a separate tank for the kicker - they'll go a long time on 3 gallons. If you need it in an emergency you can use the primer bulb to get the gas out of the main tank.

Re: Adding motor bracket & motor

Many thanks for all the repleys, I now have "parayles from anayles".
What I have decided on is the bracket size and the height of mounting it.I was also thinking of just setting the pony motor in a forward direction and using the large motor as a tiller, this way I can by pass any additional hook ups to the larger motor. Also looking for a compatible gas hose on the pony to match the gas port up on the larger motor, this way no addiotional gas tanks on board.I know the risks on gas but don't want extra gas can cluttering up things.I have time on my side just pulled boat for the winter. All 5 zincs completly gone, another problem to deal with.Let me know your thoughts.
Tight Lines
Skinny

The zincs might be better in a separate post. Was your boat hooked up to shore power? If so, you were probably giving your zinc to protect your neighbour's under-zinced boats. If that's the case, install a galvanic isolator or unplug. Or, just buy lots of zincs. You can also hang a big one over the side on a length of wire - much easier to check/replace.

Airman,
Rodger that on seperate zinc to hang over side--only added zinc comment because I was shocked to see all zincs completely gone.I'm anal
about shore power cord being any where near water, slip mate not so concerned.
Tight Lines
Skinny
