I need to figure out what rpms I am running in the water, so I can get a prop with the right pitch. should I add a tach permanetly? or is there I can get the RPM reading with some type of tool? thanks Bryan

Re: Adding or temporary tach

adding a tach is a great idea, not only for propping, but for diagnostics when you have problems,

Re: Adding or temporary tach

I have a friend who is a normal automotive mechanic. We tried his tach one day on my motor. (79 140HP merc.) The thing was good till 10,000 rpm. Sounded good enough..

Not. We got out on the water and were soon doing in excess of 10,000 rpm. His tach was designed for 4 stroke engines and this one is a 2 stroke.

A Tach can be a wonderfull device to have permenently installed. It is one of the more expensive gages though. I have wondered if a generic tach from an auto part's store could be made to work .. If so it would save some cash.

Good luck and let us know (or let me know) how it works out. (I still have no tach, but will need one soon myself.)

- Brian
