Adding PTT

How difficult is it to add power trim and tilt to an outboard? I would prefer PTT, but have found some good deals on non PTT motors. I am suspecting that this could be a balancing act between the extra cost of adding PTT compared to buying a motor with it already installed.

Bob

Re: Adding PTT

Trim and tilt brackets have their uses, but they're not nearly as good as factory trim/tilt. If purchasing a new motor, I wouldn't even consider a motor without it. Factory tilt units cost quite a bit. It wouldn't be cost effective to add it later.

Re: Adding PTT

In my two year quest for power tilt and trim, I can honestly tell you it is much cheaper to buy an outboard with PTT than to try to add it later. The sum of the parts is greater than the value of the whole. So buy a whole motor with PTT.

In the case of the motors I was looking at, a 40 or 50 hp twin was about $300 more with PTT than without, but I have not found the PTT parts used for under $450. Check e-bay, they usually go for around $500.

Thanks guys. You just eliminated 3/4 of the motors I have been looking at. At least I won't be saying would have, could have, should have later.

Bob
