Adding temperature gage to mercury 150 EFI

I have a 2001 mercury 150 EFI and once in a while the temperature warning goes off. I replaced the water pump last year. I would like to put in a gage to tell me exactly when it is overheating or if it really is. Is there anyway to put a permanent gage on it ? Can I use the warning signal or is it just an on/off switch ?

Yes..... It can be done, merc has made two types of sensors for this that I'm aware of.........A two wire(passive single element) #17 below, or a four wire(passive dual element) not shown but would be in-place of #17, sensor for analog gauges.

Some engines came with both cylinder heads pre-milled(see below for thermal switch) to accommodate both the warning switch #10 sensor(star side usually) and the analog gauge sensor #17 I mentioned above(port side usually).

Above: One wire "overheat" thermal switch, item #10 above. Closed(rant = closes switch to a FLAKY held in place w spring ground/the hole ) if temperature reaches 240F +/- 8 F

As a quick work around(i'd still install the analog gauge, see "rant" above) perhaps use a non-contact I.R. thermometer next time it overheats if the neighbor has one :) Unless something is shorting out on the T.S.'s output, I'd guess it's overheating, airpax makes those T.S.'s for merc(or used too) and those folks make good stuff. They are fused glass hermetically sealed, they rarely fail internally. However, I went to a two wire T.S., (see rant again)

And yes, the overheat warning sensor is just a switch.

As far as the gauge itself, personally I'd try to matched my dash's existing gauges however that may be. Since Faria makes(a high percent of OEM's) mine, I just went to Faria dealer.

See your Merc dealer for tha gauge. Your motor has a sensor for it already. Won't be a single wire like in tha drawing. On tha port side head you will see it It will be a tan/blue wire (along with two tan, temp sensor for efi) stickin' outta tha sensor. This multi wire sensor is "standard" with tha efi motors. It may already be "plugged into tha appropriate wire wire in tha harness goin' to tha front of tha boat for tha gauge........

Not sure but its easy ta confirm, Tha two wires going to tha temp sensor on tha efi plenum might be tan/blk and tha one going to tha harness for tha temp gauge may be just tan. Doin' this from memory so..........

Batting almost 1000 still Duke!! But good call, I couldn't remember either, I had to go look

"Tan" on the two wire sensor setup for the gauge signal and "tan/blu" for T.S. signal(as seen above).

"Tan/blu"(below) on the four wire for the gauge signal(w 2 tan/blk wires to EFI, etc) and "tan/blu" for T.S. signal(as seen above and note the same color is used for gauge and T.S. sensors here).

One thing about it though. When ya get all 'em in play its pretty easy ta tell which one goes where. Tha two goin' to tha efi sensor are already pluged in leavin' ony one.for tha gauge. Tha over heat (on tha other side) is also already termed at a little block. tha only thing that may or may not be done is tha temp gauge wire pluged into tha wire from tha harness that goes in tha boat. If that's already done then ya just gotta find it under tha dash.........
