additional pump

This may sound not right, by my question is: is it possible to add an additiona fresh water pump? I have an AQ125A (Volvo) and it has tendency to overheat sometimes. I tried many things, but I am not sure if they work (getting annoyed by this). I was thinking what are the chances to install an additional pump, let say electric, that would "supplement" an original "impeller" pump and would be turned on when needed? Please comment, but don't laugh too hard, it hurts :)

Re: additional pump

if your orginal pumps are working corectly the motor will run at the correct temp. if your motor has something wrong that wont allow the water to flow all the pumps in the world wont help.
the last thing that happened to me was that after sucking up some great south bay bottom some small stones started to block the stat and over time they alowed more and more thinks to cut down on the water flow till the engine started to run hot after cleaning evering out back to normal.you just need to go through things carefuly and try to find anything blocking the water flow

tommays

Re: additional pump

Don't cure a symptom find the cause. If you pump is not pumping enough water now adding another one will not help much. Only so much water can go through a block at one time. If you have some sort of restriction in the motor or exhaust manifolds (my guess) all the water from a second pump will just go out the exhaust over flow never cooling the motor.

Re: additional pump

Thanks for the comments. I just replaced manifold, head gasket, little polishing on lifters, all loose ends, etc. Actually all this for 20 year old boat is not that bad, considering it is being done for the first time. I am a third owner of this boat and have it foe past 4 years. Besides occasional overheating i have not had any problems. Overheating was sporadic, mostly associated with rough water and speed. When water is calm, it will not overheat. I took boat on Lake Michigan, and while there were no waves I had no problem (going to the fishing spot, full throttle for about 7 miles). Later however, winds changed and on the way back we were jumping on 3 foot waves, and start overheating. Had to go medium speed, so the whole stern was under water. I know that some seals/washers in the upper parts of the stern drive are worn off and need to be replaced. I have placed muffs on the water intake, taped them real good and turn water on. Water start pouring from the junction where the seal is, right below the goose neck where rubber pipe is connected. I have changed water line that is inside the boat, by the engine, that goes into the pump. I have removed copper pipe and replaced that with the same diameter rubber, steel reinforced hose. I was thinking that by adding some other means of supplying water I may help little bit, but judging from your comments it does not make much sense. I am taking boat on the water tomorrow (Sunday) for some engine adjusting, will se how temperature will hold. I know that I need to buy new seals, but I have no idea what part numbers they are, or where to order them, any suggestions? What the damage to my beer money I can expect? Thank you again for help :)
