Adhesive for installing deck

I hope to install the deck tonight. I am going to use screws on the stings and bulkheads.

Do I need to use an adhesive?

I will be using putty between the hull and deck and then tabbing over them.

3M 4200 ~ 5200
PL
PB (made from materials you should have on hand already to do the glass & resin work)

Are all suggested adhesives for your deck to stringer/bulkhead connections

Re: Adhesive for installing deck

I was using Merton's Hull and Deck Putty in place of PB for the gap between the deck and hull(I actually posted about it last night).

I could apply a light coat to the stringers and bulkheads before screwing down the deck?
Hull and Deck Putty
HULL & DECK PUTTY

A smooth, strong, non-sagging polyester putty. Reinforced with milled fiber. Shapes and spreads nicely. Excellent, general purpose polyester filler above or below the waterline.

Yes, I've read the discussion over at: Is this similar to PB?

As was posted a few times in that thread about whether you could use it as a substitute for PB, maybe, maybe not.

Many probably wouldn't. But that's in large part because they've never seen it, held it in their hands, or used it. If you want to use it in as many areas as you can, as it seems you do, that is wholly up to you. If it works and works well, great! Post up pix of the success.

Else, well that'd be up to you as to whether you want to post a negative result. It would certainly help those that follow behind us on iboats to steer clear of it for the uses you've asked about.

Some products perform well above expectations & well above stated specifications. As I'm sure you know, not all will do both, some won't do either.

I can't tell you TO use that putty, but I leave it up to you to decide if you shouldn't.

You may want to attempt it's use 1st OUT of the boat on a CSM wrapped & resin'd stringer mockup & see how it binds a CSM wrapped & resin'd piece of mockup decking. And let it cure overnight. Check it in the morning & let it sit until tomorrow afternoon. If it tests OK, try it on top of the stringers, and let it cure sufficiently to test how well it seems to be holding the whole deck down. If it tests OK, try it in a limited trial in your hull/deck joint. And let it sufficiently cure. If it seems to hold fast & is a good subsurface for your tabbing, go for it.

But that will likely be much slower process & take much longer to complete the task at hand. Using PB you make yourself WILL WORK & will work as expected. As such, all of this could take place over the course of a Fri afternoon, Sat am into early evening & you'd be ready to glass the surface of the deck on Sun am. It would all be installed, cured, filled & tabbed.

Take lots of pix & post how it goes, good/bad/sufficient but not great/etc....

Best of luck, whichever way you proceed....

BTW: 3M Bondo has a product that is stated that it can be used in marine applications. Very few resto threads list it as what they've used.

I think your Answers are in the First thread you started about this question mate :) ..

Re: Adhesive for installing deck

Thanks again. And thanks for not getting on me too much for asking the same question.
Yesterday, I was worried about the deck to the hull. Today it is the deck to the stringers but I guess it really is the same application.

I don't mind not using the the product. I just need to make some progress and thought I would have to place an order. I did see that the home depot has the 5300 so I could pick that up.

I decided to hold off on installing tonight. It's too cold. I could heat the garage but it wont hold the heat long enough after I stop.
