Id like to clean the cooling system a little from oxide deposits.

Was thinking of concocting a mild solution of 1 or 2kg citric acid crystals with 100litre water not to hurt the metal?

Has anyone any experience with this?

how crazy is this from 1 to 10 ?:confused::)

Try and let us know, about 11 :D You have inside rubber, o'rings parts as well. If it's a brand new engine, just flush after use for a minimum of 5 minutes, or until engine dies out of gas, will have clean water paths for years to come.

Happy Boating

Usual cooling system oxide clean-out is done either with salt-away or vinegar. Only needed if overheating due to cooling system restriction. Any mild acid will dissolve the aluminum oxides... But... if the corrosion is severe, you may end up eating away more than you want, creating a piece of junk metal. YMMV.

At first glance, i dont seem to have any serious corrosion.
at which corrosion stage wld ppl use salt away or vinegar (acetic acid) pls ?
I mean how do u actually gauge cooling system corrosion?

normal vs hmmm heqqhemm ?
let sleeping dogs lie vs preventive maintanance

I flushed my 90HP in a 30 gallon drum of water with a gallon of vinegar and about a pint of Muriatic acid for about 5 minutes, then neutralized the mixture with baking soda for 5 minutes, then flushed with fresh water for 15 minutes, probably removed some salt or calcium deposits from internals. I did this mostly for my own satisfaction but figure it cleaned it out pretty good.

interesting exotic concoction .... i like ... :D
but if I may ask
what is the purpose of muriatic acid in the mix ? is it to do with etching the Al ?
I agrre and like the neutralisation with baking soda

380voltz - If you're serious about wanting to clean any scale and such out of your cooling water passages, then take a look at this link. This stuff will do the trick and it's safe and biodegradable. You won't have to worry about eating away your motor or disposing of any home-brewed acid concoction. Just rinse with fresh water when you're done and keep the solution for re-use later. I've bought and used some myself and can personally vouch that the stuff works like magic. Put a few drops of this stuff onto a bit of seashell and watch the shell start to bubble and melt away and you'll be convinced. Yet it's safe enough to be used in food preparation areas and handle with bare skin. They say it's stocked in France and Turkey to name a couple of places, and they have an international phone line if you're interested. Just my 2?; your d?cision.
