My new to me Stratos has an adjustable jack plate beteween the motor and the transom. I know this is a newbie question but what is the purpose of being able to move the motor up or down? Performance maybe?

Right now it's bottomed out, lowest position possible. Is where it should be? The boat goes close to 60 now, plenty fast enough for me, but from a standpoint of fuel economy or any other reason should I ever move it up?

I know some of you are shaking your heads, but help me out here, I need to understand the mechanics of this obviously desirable accsesory I have.:)

Re: Adjustable Jack Plate

You fine tune the prop height to your specific prop, engine, hull, and operating conditions. Some props like to run deeper than others. Also, by moving the prop further aft it's running in less turbulent water.

It's hard to say if your jack plate is where it belongs right now, that's best determined through experimentation. By adjusting jack plate height for maximum performance you'll also be increasing your efficiency.
