Have a 75 Hp Johnson from 83-84 that won't run properly on idle (it stops). I was wondering if anyone knew how to adjust the carbuetor on these engines.

At the top of the Johnson and Evinrude Outboards forum page there is a sticky marked "top secret". There is a lot of good information in there that can help you get your motor to run right. Read those files then if you have any specific questions repost.

Thanks for your answer, but the carbuetor settings on the sticky marked "top secret" was for johnson/mercury outboards from 1980 and earlier, and i have an 84' model

The static setting for the low speed needle is 1 1/4 turn out from lightly seated. Then you have to have the boat in the water, warmed up and in gear. You adjust the low speed needle to get the best idle, takes patience and a little time. The idle RPM should be set to 700-750 when you are done.
Have you checked to make sure you are firing on all cylinders?

Thanks, Daviet. I'll check out the needle later. Yes, the motor is running on all cylinders, but I forgot to mention in my first post that the engine is spitting out too much oil. I assume this can be corrected by adjusting the carbuetor(s)? Or maybe these engines are known for this?

The problem with my engine was a defect choke, which resulted in a high use of gasoline (much smoke and high oil usage.)

The carbuetors were fine. You can check this by disconnecting the choke (not needed while the engine runs), and if the enigne starts to run normally, you've found your problem.

i have 89, says turn screw next to choke all the way in until gently seated and then back it out 1 1/4 turns. and it should run at idle.
