Can the points on a 1957 18hp Johnson fd11 be adjusted with the flywheel in place? It looks like the large hole in the top of the flywheel allows access, I just am not sure exactly what position it should be in when an adjustment would be made. I replaced both plugs, coils, condensers, and points sets. I gapped the plugs at .030 and the points at .020. The only difference is the plugs that came out of it were Champion "6" series and the new ones from Engine, Blade, and Prop in Milwaukee are Champion "4" series.

The goal is to try and fire the motor in the next couple of days or over the weekend to see what else it might need. I have a new impeller and a carb rebuild kit on hand if needed. I am currently swapping out the gasket and line on the pressure tank as those were leaking and prevented an attempt at starting the motor. This will be the first time the motor has been run in 4 years, and am going between working on this, replacing the transom on the fiberglass boat, and replacing the fuel pump in the tow vehicle......

Yes, that is what the hole is for. As long as it is lined up so you can access the points, the position is correct. Throttle/spark advance position has nothing to do with it. Either plug is fine, don't worry about it.

Don't know how it is with the fd11, but I have a QD-21 and the manual recommends adjusting the point via the access window on the flywheel. There is enough room through that window to get the feeler gauge in there, and a screwdriver to turn the adjustment screw. I know b/c I did this last night!
