I have a 98 Johnson 115 hp and it runs fine but the idle leaves a lot to be desired. When at idle it shakes a lot until you give it some gas. What is the correct process of adjusting the four carbs. They really hide the idle mixture screw on the carbs. Two I can see but the other two will take a little more work to get to. One other thing- when I took off the air silencer I noticed that the two top carbs had a seating gasket down in the rim of the air tube but not the bottom ones.Is that normal or are there two missing?

There are no adjustments to speak of. The carbs need to be cleaned. And by that I mean cleaned properly.

Snoopy, The initial setting on your carb idle mixture screws is 5-3/4 turns out from lightly seated. The mixture screw is recessed on the lower left of the carb body. Procedure calls for running the motor in forward gear for 3 minutes to warm her up, before adjusting. Adjust for highest RPM.

First check that its coming out of Quickstart as bad sensor or t-stat will cause it to stay engauged. When engauged engine will idle rough untill A) reaches about 100 degrees B) engine rpm is raised above 2000 pm. If this is not the case to adjust carbs but, you cannot do it on a hose, must be in water, untied and in gear and at temp (quickstart disengauged)

Faztbullet- can you enlighten me as to what is the quickstart function and how do I check to see if it being used or is disengauged. Where is it located on the engine and what function does it do. Thanks

you may want to take the carbs off and disassemble them, clean them and install a rebuild kit and reinstall...before you go trying to adjust them. that way you have a baseline.... all the carbs should have the same gaskets....that's a bad sign you mentioned...

If ....if, you think the carbs are clean. you could reseat..LIGHTLY the idle needle and back out the 5-3/4 turns( as a starting point)...

quikstart its when you start the motor properly,( not engaging the nuetral fast idle to get it started) it engages its own idle speed, until the motor reaches a certain temp...then it shuts itself off, and the idle falls to where it normally would be.

To keep it simple it is a feature that advances timing when started to help engine start/warmup quicker and has a high idle 1100-1400 rpm and when sensor on port head reaches 96-100 degrees it drops out and returns timing to original setting...
