Adjusting Throttle Cable at Engine

I did a search and read a bunch of threads. I couldn't find any answers that satisfied me so I'll pose the question again. I put brandy new cables on my engine. New shift and new throttle. When I shift the engine and operate the throttle to full then bring it back to neutral, the throttle arm doesn't return to idle. It stays open a bit and the engine races. What is the proper way to adjust the length of the cable throw? I read a few times that you need to put the throttle arm against the stop and then adjust the trunion nut on the cable until it fits without moving the throttle arm. What about the length of the nut at the control?

The trunion nut at the engine is nylon (plastic) and I set the original length to where the threads on the cable just start to peek out inside the nut. At the controls, the nut is metal and I can't see the inside where it threads so I just threaded it down about half way on the cable and installed it.

What's the proper way to adjust the cable ?

If it isn't going back to regular idle than i would screw the throttle end further down and tighten the nut. Just check to make sure that the throttle plate is wide open when the controls are at wide open throttle. If i recall the Yamaha control instructions say the conrol end should be screwed 8mm down at the control unit side. Although i imagine that is only a guideline so you don't stip the threads out rather than for adjustment purposes.

What type of engine do you have? The manual usually lists the correct measurement on cable at engine,Ive never adjusted cables at control box.

1987 Yamaha 200. I started by shortening the throttle end of the cable. I'll see what that gets me. So far so good. Now onto that pesky problem I created for myself, water in my gas tank.

Water in gas

Water in gas

I stuck a hand syphon down into the back of the tank by the pickup and sucked out a total of 10 gallons worth of suspect gas. I filled two five gallon cans with it. At the bottom of each jerry can is a good three to four inches of noticeable ethanol/water mix phased out of the gasoline. Maybe more. I figure I have a gallon of water total. There is still more syphoning to do but I'm thinking I'll end up with close to 2 gallons of water. Makes sense, I had 20 gallons of gas in it.

:D I put it there when I washed the tank. Evidently I didn't drain it well enough afterwards.

I bet you will never wash a tank with water again. We all make mistakes ,we just have to learn from them.Does it have a drain plug in bottom of tank, can you you get to plug, can you take tank out of boat?Whats the tank made of?

Next time I wash a tank with soap and water, I'll make sure to double dog empty it out. It's an older aluminum tank. I've sucked 15 of the approximately 20 gallons of gas out. I used the pickup to suck the bad stuff out with the boat tilted as high as I could get it on the trailer. I'm not noticing any water slugs in the containers so I'm hoping I got it all. I'm also running out of containers to put the gas in. I'll be putting in some more fresh gas shake it up again and see what comes out the syphon. If all is good I'll test it out with some spare filters and a spare tank at hand.

Gasoline being lighter than water makes for a big problem with below deck fuel tanks. Most people end up taking the tank out to clean it!Ive seen many a boats sold from fuel issues, they are so simple but so time consuming. What type of fish are you posing with?
