adjusting throttle?

I have a 125 hp force. It take a while to start and u have to give it a lot of throttle. Then it wants to die when u put it into gear. Acts like it its a low idle speed. Can I adjust the throttle?
Also after a while it begins to overheat. When u get it out and go it has a good stream and runs great but sitting at an idle for a short time it starts sounding the alarm like its overheating. Not sure if low idle speed and overheating can be the sane issue?
Any help will be great

Re: adjusting throttle?

Year? Sounds like multiple probs. Got a manual? You're going to become one with the engine.

Re: adjusting throttle?

No, it is probably two different and unrelated problems.

First: Drop the lower unit and change the water pump impeller.

Second: Remove the sparkplugs and either clean them or replace them with new.

Third: If changing sparkplugs does not help, there is no throttle adjustment. There is an idle stop screw on the bottom of the timing tower which can be used to raise or lower idle speed. Idle speed should be 700-750 RPM in forward gear in the water.

Re: adjusting throttle?

Thanks for the answers.

It is an 89 125hp force

The compression is great and it has good spark.

Had it checked out before last week. And mechanic said water pump was working good also.

We adjusted the idol speed and that seemed to help. It cranked on first try and went into forward and reverse immediatly without dieing.
It also seemed to run better when sitting at idle and did not over heat.
Im not saying it fixed the problems but it sure helped.

Now I have a new issue.
After we ran boat most of the day we were out and then the throttle would not stay down. When u got it to plain out u had to hold the throttle down urself or it would come back up.
Not sure what this problem is.
Could it be the little black clip beside the carburator?

Re: adjusting throttle?

It is possible that the mechanic adjusted the idle on the controls, and not the timing tower. He probably shortened or lengthened the throw of the linkage that attaches to the lower cowl. Again, this is just a possibility without seeing it. Maybe a pic of the linkages on the motor would help.

Re: adjusting throttle?

If your US Marine control box has a black knob near the key, then the black knob is a drag adjuster for the control handle. Old Chrysler controls do not have drag adjustment and it is very common to need to hold the control handle in wide open throttle position.

If the mechanic opened the control box to adjust cables, it is difficult to replace the drag properly and he would have needed to be careful. If this is the case, then the box needs to be opened and the drag screw replaced properly.

Thanks for the reply. I believe he adjusted a small screw by the carburator. And the reason the throttle will not stay down when running wide open is a liitle black piece broke off there at the carb. He wired it up and it is working now bit can some one tell me what that piece is called that allows ur throttle to stay down when running it plained out?

Sorry for all the technical lingo but as u can tell I am no mechanic. Thanks agian for the help.
I will try to post some pics of what I am talking about?
