adjusting to improve hole shot

'78 merc 800 80hp on a 15' tri-hull. Good compression, rebuilt fuel pump, cleaned carbs, de-carbed, link and sync'ed. Running better than ever (5400rpm WOT, smooth as silk) except for hole shot especially when pulling a skier. As per link and sync, I've backed out the idle mixture jets a quarter turn. Think it helped, but it also lowered my idle enough to kill the motor at idle in gear. Is this expected? Should I adjust the idle stop screw accordingly 'til I get idle and a hole shot? Or am I missing another issue?

no it's not expected. you may have missed something in the process, set the idle stop up a little and see what happens

Hmmm, that's what I was afraid of. I guess I ought to go through the link and sync process from scratch to avoid chasing some basic set-up problem from the wrong end... darn.
