Adjusting Trim Limit Switch

Guys, I have a 1986 Mercruiser Alpha 1 Sterndrive I'm trying to adjust the trim limit switch on. It was working perfectly until I struck a submerged object. Prior to this, the trim went up until the red line as indicated on the trim gauge, further then that the Trailer button was needed and worked. Now the outdrive only goes up about halfway to the red line on the gauge, if I want it any higher I need to use the trailer button. So I tried adjusting the limit switch on the port side of the gimbal housing and was able to get it to go a little higher, but still not to the red line on the gauge like it used to. The limit switch is now adjusted out to the end of its adjustment range. Can I take the switch completely off and reclock it to get where I need to go in the adjustment range?

Re: Adjusting Trim Limit Switch

The limit switch is adjusted to the drive position, not the indication on the gauge. Set the limit so that at maximum TRIM up the drive still has lateral support from the gimbal ring, AND NO HIGHER! If the gauge is showing differently, then adjust the trim gauge sender, on the starboard side of the gimbal ring.

Re: Adjusting Trim Limit Switch

The previous owner of my boat was having problems with the trailer button and he bypassed the trim limit so that the trim up button will raise the drive completely to trailering position. As long as I'm conscious of not trimming the drive up too far, is there any downside to this condition?
