ahoy captains,as you can see in the pic ,i have the throttle at idle, and the idle screw is all the way back against the cylinder wall stop point.where it should be .how ever what i see with a timing light when runing in the water .is 8 degrees (after) tdc!when in the manual for a 135 ,1975 ,rude, it should be 5 (btc),the yellow mark is where the advance lever would be to achieve that 5degrees at idle.almost straight up and down!
i have 3 marks ,red ,yellow ,blue,..the blue mark is where i get my 20 degrees bdc for wot.which is ok
in this pic if i were to move the advance lever to straight up yellow mark in pic for my 5 degree idle pickup timing, the idle screw wouldnt even be close to touching the block so i could adjust my idle speed!so what do i do? get a longer idle screw from ace hardware?i tried a omc timer base last night and got these results also same thing with my new rapair brand time base,so the timer base is ok.also have all new rapair parts,my carbs have fixed jets,..many thanks .all be on the side, dave z florida> here is the pic>>

That stop (screw) is the full advance stop. It has nothing to do with idle. It doesnt' contact the throttle arm until somewhere in the mid to high 3000 rpm range. With the full advance stop that far back I doubt the motor will get the boat on plane unless it's on something very very light.

Before you run it at wot to set the full advance timing, get the fuel pump back on the other side where it's supposed to be. And get rid of the plastic hose. Fire in the pulse line will melt that and leave you starnded. Besides, the pump being that far from the pulse signal may mean inadaquate fuel supply carbs the carbs.

What is that other big plastic hose in the pic? The one going behind the throttle arm.

the idle screw i mentioned has the black cap on itin the pic..the pulse line i moved to this side also with the pump you can see the pulse line between the fuel pump and the throttle cam in the pic.it works great , abit unorthdox but functions great , im only using the clear house tilli clear up the problems so i can see air bubbles if any etc:.if i run my spark advance arm to the yelow arrow location i get my 5 degrees,, if back against the black caplikein the pic i get like way off the chart. im getting great power atfter plane arounf 4000 grand around 45 . but idle is nt that smooth way down around 600 r.p.m. i have fixed jets ,, so i cant ttune her.imay get better carbs with adjustable screws for jet flow.but my pickupt timing is way off .i just wonder why

My maunal lists full advance at 28btdc for all 1975 V4's
It doesn't specify an idle timing.
If you set the max advance at 28btdc with the engine in the water under way doing at least 4500rpm and you do a proper link&sync then the idle timing should take care of itself.

Re: advance lever not where it should be,to get timing

i have the original shop manual from 1975 o,m,c 20 degrees, wot. and 5 pickup. theres no way i can get 5 so the heck with it ill just go with the 20 wot.i dont no why i cant not get what the book calls for .the time advance lever only would move like one inch if i went for the 20 wot and 5 pickup.so i will just let the advance lever move all the way back to the block with the idle screw and at that point she will be way off at around 10 atc!!. long as im up over like 650 -700 r.pm shes runs ok.idle in book calls for 650 in gear.so thanks to all! we gave it a shot ..cheers!

Only a few things could cause this problem in my eyes fly wheel, spun timing base, or an OMC ingnition part dated after 1977
