Good article. PM this to LadyFish for inclusion in the Safety Tips area (if it isn't there already).

Great article, really makes you think about how close some of us have come to being in a situation like that.

I've been on the Great Lakes and had motor trouble more than once, and been in some intense fog back the pre-gps days that made things pretty darn interesting.;)

To say that a boat can sink quickly leaving little time for life-saving actions would be an understatement. I'm glad to have been taught how to safely operate a vessel, by making mistakes and learning the old-fashioned way.:)

I agree that this should be linked in the safety forum.

Re: advance preparation for disaster

My neighbor who fishes off Holland on Lake Michigan had a friend go down that way in a 25' CC last summer. Livewell was pumping water into the bottom of the boat for a while. Lake was not to rough, but when someone landed a fish at the rear of the boat, everyone went aft to see/help and that was enough to capsize the boat. They had to swim under to retrieve life jackets and cushions and could not get a radio to work. They we out a long ways and basically clung to the capsized boat until someone saw them. I think it was a few hours. I will have to see if I can find a link to the news article.

Here is the news article. After the boat was pulled out they found out why she went over.

Like others have posted, bad things can happen quickly. Be prepared.
