Didnt find what I was looking for using search. Im looking at used boats, both '90 and '92-94 models with Mercury sterndrives. Am I right to say the '90 is Gen I and the 92 and through 99 or so is Gen II? Im wondering if there is a big enough advantage in the Gen II to keep me from a good deal on a 90 model?

Gen II started in 1991. In the Adults only section under Miscellaneous Mercruiser information You can download the article labeled How to ID an Alpha Style Outdrive, and History. This will tell you all the differences between the different outdrives...

here is the link to it...

To answer your questions, they are both good drives, and each has high and low points. I wouldn't discount a 90 model because of drive alone.

One note, I moved this thread from the Mercury Outboard forum, and I see that you call it a Mercury Sterndrive, which it is not. It's a Mercruiser, which is the sterndrive division of Mercury Marine.
Mercury is outboard, and Mercruiser is sterndrive.

One more thing you learned. Mercruiser made the
Alpha 1 and the Alpha 1 Gen 2. There is no Gen 1.

Its a Gen I.

John Doe "Senior" wasn't given that name at birth, it was changed when John Doe "Jr" came along... ;)
