Advantages, other than cosmetic, to painting an aluminum boat?

This is a really stupid question, so I though I'd ask it on a mostly anonymous message board as opposed to someone in real like.. .:D

I see lots of info around about painting aluminum boats, is there any advantage/ practical purpose to it other than the cosmetic?

I just have a 12ft Aluminum from the 70s that was obviously painted at one time, but now is just plain old aluminum.

Was thinking of painting it, but didn't really know if there was any other reason than to pretty it up.

Thanks!

No reason whatsoever.

If I had a tinny that wasn't painted....I sure as heck wouldn't paint it.

Nope, aluminum ages like copper only not as pretty so it forms it's own protective coating, so the only reason to paint it is cosmetic unless you run itin salt water.

If you do paint no matter what type of paint you use get some etching primer on it first, paint just doesn't like to stick to aluminum, you can get it at any auto parts store.

LOL - I see we have a bunch of northerners in this thread!

Yes, there is a very good reason to paint a "tinny" - heat!

Many people here in the south paint them in light colors because light colors reflect heat, not absorb it. Camo green flats are great if you are primarily a duck hunter, but they can be very hot in the southern summers.

The above is one reason I got my Carolina Skiff. The white of my boat is alot cooler than the green jon boat it replaced. The not being metal helped too! :)
