I found a nice 17' hull for sale that is exactly what I'm looking for. Need some advice on what outboard to buy for salt water use. I want to buy a 2-cycle 90HP OMC motor, and want something low hours, but I don't really care if it's brand new. I would like power tilt/trim for shallow water operation and would like to spend something like $4000 to $6000.

My options are:
-1999 to 2002 used Johnson (or Evinrude?)
-brand new motor
-rebuilt? I don't see any reason to buy a rebuild if the other two options are available.

Is there any unbiased source of information that provides year-to-year information on outboard motors? For example, are some years better than others? Are some lines of motors manufactured by someone else and "rebranded" as OMC? Are there any fuel-injected 2-cycle OMC motors that are available that would fit my requirements and budget?

Also, I would appreciate suggestions on what vendor to buy from.

Sounds to me like youre talking about a 60 degree V4 looper. And we assume you wouldn't mind if its late enough to be one produced by BRP.

Excellent motors either carb'd or injected. You cant go wrong. Light, lots of torque and rev real quick.

Dhadley,

Where can I learn more about these motors, especially previous year models? The Johnson/Evinrude websites have no information about earlier models. Is Evinrude the fuel-injected version of the Johnson motor? How far back have they made fuel injected 2 cycles?

Are 2000 and up models considered BRP models? What is the "cutoff" year? Are the 2000 year models as reliable as later years?

Thanks for the help.

There ya go NN!

It says it doesnt have oil injection but they came with it so I'd assume it really does. Its sure worth looking into. It says "new/demo" which sounds good. I'd look into that and see what that means and what exactly the warranty is.

See -- be careful of what ya wish for!

Thanks JB!

Dont consider myself biased toward any make. Dont overlook YAMAHA. Lots of them working for a living down here, 2 and 4 strokes. In your price range, brand new out of the box. fred
