Ok I have a 71 Slickcraft SS232. Overall the boat seems to be in pretty sound shape. Drive (original electric shift) is factory fresh, 350 eng. w/300 hrs on the rebuild runs great.Setup with all the goodies for great lake fishing all custom to this boat. The drawback is I'm starting to notice one of the stringers next to the engine is getting soft. mostly at the rear near the transom. When I installed the new livewell plumbing a couple years ago the wood drilled from the transom in that area was pretty clean and almost dry (for a 34 yr. old boat)so with that being the case I don't think my problems go into the transom, but who knows.
First is there a simple way I can detect any water damage in the inner portion of the hull?
Second, The floor feels very strong and shows no sign of rot anywhere. Can there be something going on under the floor that I won't detect until it's too bad to fix cost efectively?
I plan to have the stringer fixed this winter. Any suggestions before I have this done to address anything else that could get by undetected?

Re: Advice From the Hull Gurus

It is difficult to find the rot unless the structure gets torn into. Most people will go to replace a small portion of rot, and then they will find more, and the next thing you know they have a stripped shell and the joyous task of glassing in new transom/floor/stringers. I hope that is not the case with your rig, but until someone starts cutting, you won't truely know until the floor feels like one of those gym mats that are all soft and squishy. Good luck...
