--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i bought this motor rebuilt 4 years ago over the internet.it started running rough so i checked the plugs and found water on two of the plugs.i replaced both head gaskets, still the same problem.i pulled the bubble exhaust cover off and it appeared the gasket was bad. i replaced that gasket ,went to the lake ,problem still there, motor started running rough after running a short while.so i headed back to the ramp where i pulled the plugs and the right hand and left hand bottom plugs apeared to have a whitish brown substance on them.so i pulled the exhaust plate again and noticed the area of the powerhead where the gasket sit apears to be badly pitted.i checked compression and was 130 130 120 120.i do not have the money to buy a new motor.i do have a 90 year model 90 horse evinrude that has low compression as well but no water in the plugs.any advice would be greatly appreciated

--------------------

Re: ADVICE NEEDED PLEASE 1990 V-4 115 JOHNSON

I'm hearing that this seems to be a common problem particularly in my neighborhood (salt water and sand). Pull the powerhead and replace the base gasket where it meets the midsection. When these go they allow water into bottom cyls, the lower left (#4) ,in particular, so I'm told. Replaced mine last Friday. The powerhead on mine (89 88hp "rude), came up with little trouble using a light block and tackle bolted to the overhead beam above my garage door.
