Advice on 1971 60hp Johnson - should I fix it?

Hi there -

I've got a 60hp Johnson and I've found the #2 cylinder has been scored badly and the piston has a hole in it.

Is this thing worth fixing? I haven't been able to find the parts like the cylinder sleeve. I found pistons and that sort of thing but the sleeve is obviously the most important. Is there a good place close to Ontario Canada where I could maybe get a power head or a used motor? Looking for suggestions - thanks!

has it ever been bored out?

if not you could go with oversized pistons.

i would price all the parts you will need then do some pricing on outboards ............... i would think you could get another cheaper than you could rebuild that one..............

there are may choices if you run a search on the net for rebuilt outboard engs............. just make sure you do some research and try to find some good references on the company.

if you get a newer used one you are that much better off but if you get one that interchanges parts with yours then you have bookoo extra parts.

you have an obsolete motor. with an hydro electric lower unit. the solenoids are NLA. i do not believe financially, it is worth repairing. sell the lower unit, and move on.

Well I got lucky (maybe! lol) to find the exact same motor working. So after I pick it up I have my old one for parts as I need them. That should at least get me through this season and perhaps next.

Thanks for the comments.
