I have three unsightly screw holes around my 740s that need to be fixed. If possible, I would love to match them with gelcoat to the rest of the console. I know this will be difficult, but anything is better than what's there. I've been reading a bit in this section and I watched some videos about similar topics on Youtube. Here is my plan, please let me know if I'm going about this the right way, or you have any extra advice!

1. Remove 740
2. Fill holes from the back with white Marine-Tex. Let dry.
3. Widen holes slightly with small dremel bit. How wide should I make them??
4. Clean area with acetone.
5. Fill in holes with gelcoat patch* to a level slightly above the rest of the area. How much gelcoat will I need? What is the best way to apply?
6. Wet sand to 600 grit. Starting with 200?
7. Finish area with rubbing compound, polish, and wax.
8. Re-install 740.

*The console is very white, but is probably faded a bit from pure white. West Marine sells Resin coloring agents made by Evercoat that says they can dye gelcoat. Would I try a tiny amount of yellow and white to try and match it? Will the gelcoat dry the same color as I mix it?

Uhmm, don't use Marine Tex. It's epoxy based and gelcoat won't adhere well to epoxy. Problem with small holes is getting them to blend with the surrounding area and then not "Pop" loose after a while. Your plan is pretty good but enlarging them "Slightly" might not be sufficient. Also getting the Gelcoat color to match is an "Artform" in itself and is NOT easy. You will fuss with it a lot and it will NOT dry the same color and in different light it will look different and in a week it will look different and in a month it will look different. Trying to polish such a small patch will be difficult. I'd spray it on also using a PreVal sprayer. Get one @ Lowe's. Under $10 bucks.

I would get an inexpensive piece of black or white Formica, make a trim ring out of it and glue it to the panel...
You could also make a trim ring out of starboard, but that gets a bit pricey...
You could just fill the holes with a paste type gel coat and color match as close as possible...
You might be able to find some nice looking rubber, self adhesive weatherstrip and stick all around to act as a trim ring...
If you have any wood accents in the boat, you could make a wooden trim ring...
You could also get some white styrene plastic sheet and make a trim ring...
Maybe none of those above will work, but maybe you will get a better idea from them...
Let us know what you come up with...:)
