Advice on first pontoon purchase

Me and my wife are considering buying a pontoon. This will be our first boat ever. Several times every summer we rent a pontoon on Patoka lake which is near us. We would love to be able to do this every week and also travel to other lakes in the summer and have our own. My question is, we feel comfortable up to $9,000 for this and want a decent dependable boat. Would we be better to find a good cheep boat with a motor and put the money into redoing it like we want or just find one for sale that is ready to go?

Re-doing one is certainly a cost effective way of getting into a boat. Ponttons are EASY to refurbish.

Caution, stay away from anything with damaged logs (toons).

The bigger the logs are, the better it will handle weight.

Don't underpower it. Go for at least 80% of it's rated engine capacity. A larger engine will use less fuel than a small one running hard.

You can purchase just about every pontoon piece you may need, right here on iboats. Great prices, shipped to your door.

Re: Advice on first pontoon purchase

Welcome to Iboats.

That is a hard question to answer. For me it was buy cheaper and redo interior. I got a deep discount on front end and left a margin for extra problems. I had priced out the new interior and other items that I knew it needed. I also was able to have engine checked out by a marine mechanic that cleaned the carbs and had it running before I took delivery. (Boat had set up a few years)

The unknowns are... How much can/will you do yourself? Do you have the tools, time and help to complete them in a timely manner? How soon do you want to be on the water after purchase? What needs does the Boat, Motor and Trailer have and the costs for that?

Always remember... B.O.A.T. stands for Break Out Another Thousand!

Best of luck and have fun this summer!

That's a good all around size (boat and motor) and should serve you very well as a first boat. The thing about rental boats is they're a roll of the dice (all used boats are, but rental boats are especially). On one hand they're rental boats which means lots of abuse from stupid people and lots of hours. On the other hand, well, they're rental boats, which means they must be kept up or they can't be rented, so IMO they're a roll of the dice worth taking as long as one is prepared for the possibility of rolling snake eyes. The thing you can do to mitigate your risk is know what you're getting. There's no point asking about hours because there will obviously be a bunch, but ask for service records that tell you what was done when and by whom. For example, if the LU was replaced (probably was) was it done by a qualified tech or Junior and Skeeter at the marina? Ask if the toons leak or ever have. There's a good chance they were subjected to an impact or two resulting in a leak or two over time. That's not a deal breaker IMO but definitely a negotiating point. You can easily check for water in the toons by shaking the front of the boat while it's on the trailer. While you're doing that take a peek under the boat to check for soft decking, rotted cables and such. And speaking of the trailer, don't forget about the trailer. Since it's a rental chances are it's been sitting dormant which means you'll likely have to service it and replace the brakes. Looks like a nice rig considering the kind of life its had. I wouldn't hesitate to at least look into it. Good luck and let us know. Oh, and welcome aboard.:)

I think that's a decent "toon".

Being sold by a dealer adds some confidence. They have some "skin" in the game.

Wait, Don't jump in on something that you may have or want to re-do later. If you just look around one will come up. Did you heck IBoats used boat section. You should be able to find a medium sized Pontoon boat dressed up with a trailer for around $9,000. they may want more but never pay the asking price on a used boat. It's bad enough what they want for a new boat. There way over Priced. Shoot for a higher priced boat. Stay away from boat dealers, they lie. It's like buying a used house check them out.

Re: Advice on first pontoon purchase

My neighbor has a pontoon and for some unknown reason he installed a 25HP Mercury on it. I can tell you from first hand experience that he only goes around 10 to 11mph wide open. So make sure you don't have an under powered motor on it. And secondly, not knowing, why do a lot of folks install a third 'toon on their pontoons? I see it a lot and wonder what the reason is...

I have rented tri-toons in the past. I have no Idea what the differance is supposed to be other then allowing for more weight on board. My wife thinks the tri-toons feel less stable and rock more. I have never noticed much differance.

Lighten up, Francis LOL. He's not going to jump in on anything. Looking around is exactly what he's doing. He's going to look at a boat that meets his criteria. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't. No reason to call folks liars.

Re: Advice on first pontoon purchase

I just bought my first pontoon. It is a 2006 SunTracker 21 with a 90Hp 4 stroke with 80 hours on it. I paid $13K. When I first started looking I was looking in the same price range as you were and didn't find anything in the condition I wanted. I also decided that i wanted a 4 stroke fuel injected outboard so that bumped my price point higher.

You can see what I bought in this thread. Post 33

I ended up driving to AZ to buy mine. If you are willing to drive a bit, check out CL and eBay ads a little out of your area. I noticed that pontoons generally sold a lot cheaper in areas outside of mine. Maybe its the same for you as well.

Those triple tube people w/ their big motors are trying to impress people w/ the fact they can run 40-50 mph through 3'-4' seas. These guys are usually trying to over compensate for other anatomical deficiencies !!!

Re: Advice on first pontoon purchase

Here is one we have been looking at. Have not seen in person yet. It is owned and was used as a rental on the lake. They said they will perform summer service, inspect and clean. Its the right price, size and has what we are looking for. Anyone thoughts on this one?

2003 Crest Sport XR RE 22 ft. Pontoon Boat Yamaha 90 hp & trailer

Not sure if you have checked but there are quite a few nice looking ones on louisville craigslist. I purchased from Just add water boats in Indianapolis. I'm not sure what they have right now but they have a lake beside the showroom so you can test drive the boat before you buy.
