Advice on Running a motor after sitting

I have finally gottten my motor perfected (I am allowed to say that?...lol) Anyway, I was wondering if there are any 'unwritten rules' to running a motor on the lake after it has been sitting for God only knows how long...Should I just idle it around for 30 minutes or so? Only run it for a couple hours? Just curious here.....
