In the next few weeks I plan to order a 2004 Lund Pro V 1775 which is rated for 150 hp. The local dealer I have dealt with for years carries Yamaha, Evinrude & Johnson.
Outboards in this general catagory have been changing, especially the Evinrude catagory and I don't know whether to get, for instance, the Yamaha 115 or a similar Evinrude or ???
Any suggestions very welcome.

Re: Advice on which outboard to buy

Roscoe, I had decided on the 4 stroke Yamaha for 2003 but postponed my decision till 2004 models. The weight difference between Yam and Evinrude 115s is only about 30 # (402 v 370). I think the Yami is "CARB 3 star" v. Evinrude 115 is CARB 2 Star. I am getting an 8 hp kicker to troll with so that is not big issue but quiet and lack of smoke and fuel efficiency is (32 gallon tank limits range on a gas guzzler)

2K, so you would go all the way to the 150 max rating? My last rig was underpowered (19 foot alum with 60 Evinrude) so moving to a 115 on a 17ft 2 in boat seems like a big jump already. The Evinrude fans tell me the 2 cycle will get "out of the hole" faster. I guess I don't imagine any 115 would seem slow to me when I sometimes had a hard time gettng out of the hole at all.

Re: Advice on which outboard to buy

It is a common advice to get 75-80% of the max rated hp. This seems plenty in your case and may provide for saving $$ as 115's costs less than 150's - also considering running costs. 4-strokes in this range have a weight issue as well.

Those new 4-strokes runs like a charm.

My guess is, that the resale value will be higher with a ~115 hp 4-stroke late design EFI than a ~150 hp 2-stroke.

As gas prices are still increasing, mpg is getting more and more important - also re. resale value.

Re: Advice on which outboard to buy

Hello
It has been my observation that going with the max rating is always best. make the cruise speed lower and the engine work less. saves fuel too.Yamaha is releasing a new 4cyl efi 4 stroke 150 soon. hole shot is way over rated. the difference is maybe 2 seconds to planing speed. most manufacurers cannot seem to correctly prop a 4 stroke. I have to deal with propping or repropping of new rigs all the time. most factory proppings are just a guess at best and dangerous at worst.I could go on and on about most factory rigs. my money would be with the yamaha. I still do not trust any of the direct injected engines. I work on them a lot but dont trust them. the 4 strokes seem to basically work well. only some minor recalls so far from yamaha.
good luck and keep posting. and remember when your boat is loaded and trying to get a skier up you will wish you had stepped up and got a motor :) :) :)

Re: Advice on which outboard to buy

Went through the same process a year ago. My requirements were for an 18 Foot Lund Fisherman. Wanted enough to pull the kids on skis and tubes but needed to be able to troll down for long time at slow speed (1 - 2 mph) for Salmon and Trout fishing. Ended up going with the Johnson 115 Four Stroke (ala Suzuki 115)- great motor. Fishes all day - no smoke - quiet as can be and starts like a champ. Would do the same again but might consider the latest Evinrude technology - hear nothing but good things about it and you lose about 60 lbs verses the Four Stoke.
