:)I am a novice in this hobby but I need help. I am going this afternoon to look at a used motor. 115 Mercury. Owner says it ran great last season, now it is not on a boat ..on a pallet in his garage. Is the chance worth it for 600 bucks? Comes with controls/cables/control box. The point is that I can see/hear it run...I dont even know how to set it up even if I had equipment to run it outside of a boat. Any advice is greatly appreciated.:D

It is worth exactly $0 (maybe the price of aluminum scrap) if you cannot do a compression test-at least.

If you just want it for parts, that's another story.

Re: Advice PLEASE!!

Hey bigdaddy, I'd post that question on the Mercury forum. The real pros will show up soon but I sence your urgency so I'll try to help with a couple key points. Do a compression test on all cylinders. All should be over 100psi and within 10% of each other. Make sure it goes in F-N-R try to manually turn the prop after shifting to check this. Judge the sellers integrity. There are some real cracker jack pros here that should be along soon with the complete skinny.

Spend some time searching the Merc forum for more info. All you need to know has probably been discussed somewhere. The only clitch is that this place is so big it might take a bit of time to find what you need.

Good luck!

DJ...You and I Must have been posting at the same time. Didn't mean to make it look like I'm stepping on your toes. Sorry If I gave that impression....Mike

Re: Advice PLEASE!!

you can build a saw horse out of 2x6s or I have seen some plans for cheap out board stands somewhere in here. take a hot battery and a gas tank..probably need to remove and clean carbs before you can do anything. But at least check compression and Spark, this will help you evaluate the motors value.
