After long idle, throttle up, engine stalls and will not run

1989 Supra Sunsport PCM (Ford) 351, Holley carb. After puttering along the shoreline for some time, the boat does not want to throttle up and go. It stalls out. In the past I have been able to rev the engine in idle and it seems to fix it, or at least it ran rough enough to get home. It would then seem fine next time we used the boat. But it is bad enough now that my wife is currently stranded in the middle of the lake.

Someone point me in the right diection: fuel (ethanol, filter), carb, electrical, timing, ? I know it can be anything but what is most likely.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... Pull the spark plugs, 'n check their color/ condition,...

My guess is the carb is runnin' Super Rich, 'n loadin' up the motor,..??
The carb might need rebuildin', cleanin', 'n check the float settings...

Is the vent line of the fuel pump got gas in it,..??
That'll mean a ruptured diaphragm...

It sounds like it mighta been awhile, so how 'bout a Full Tune-up, 'n Compression check,..??...

how old is the fuel?
do you have water separator filter?...last time changed?
last time you did a tune-up?

Last tuneup was 2010. There was moisture in the distributor cap. Tune up kit on order.

The parts guy said to drill a tiny hole in the cap to vent it. What do people think about this?

Ayuh,.... How 'bout ya just clean the vents in the housing, 'n quit drenchin' the distributer....
