After the motor is broken in

My motor is a 2001 mercury 150xr6(carbs). I use seafoam occasionally but rarely exceed 4000 rpms. For best performance my question is: Should I take the motor up to max rpms occasionally, often, or am I fine driving like a senior citizen? Growing up I would always here the words "blow the cobs out".....Thanks for any replies.....JP

I would think running it wide open for awhile would actually help it.Burn that carbon out. In other words, drive it like you stole it..:D

James, Anytime you run a motor at max RPM, you are stressing it. Now outboards are built to take this, so you are OK to run it, if the carbs are clean, and the ignition timing is set properly.
