after the rebuild.....

well today i finished a total rebuild of my 1989 GT 100hp johnson outboard and even converted it from VRO to premix. the reason for the rebuild was because the engine developed a skip and it turned out to be a missing ring on #1 cylinder. the engine now has good compression all the way around of about 120psi. i started the engine today and found that it is still skipping and does not want to idle down. my question is what could be causing the skip? Im thinking it could be a timing issue? any suggestions?

check for ignition miss with a timing light.
Do a spark test too.

Re: after the rebuild.....

Great advice, when I finished my rebuild last month I had the same issues. The timing light showed me right where the problem was, the #2 spark plug was firing intermittenly. My fix was simple, when I did my rebuild I repainted the powerhead. I got some paint where the ignition coil makes contact with the block. I went ahead and removed all the coils and sanded those contact areas shinny on both the coils and the block. Cured the problem.

Re: after the rebuild.....

Problem fixed.... after some extensive inspection today my problem had nothing to do with the timing as i suspected!! it turned out to be the carbs dumping way too much fuel in the motor all because i never took the time to properly adjust the floats during the rebuild.thanks for the help
