I am wondering what gauges to install for my motor/boat. Currently my boat has no gauges. apparently never did. what is a good tach to install on my boat for my 1991 70hp Johnson, Now its a 3cly motor and most car tachs are 4,6,or 8 settings. how can i get a tach for my engine?

Buy an outboard tach. iboats sells them as well as many used ones on xbay.

My boat has lots of factory installed gauges. The only gauges I consistently look at are gas, RPM and depth display. And, I might glance at 12V meter sometimes. RPM gauge (IMO, the most critical gauge - especially when tubing) can be bought at iboats store. Before buying, do look and decide which diameter size gauge is best for your boat (and your eyes).

Hope this helps.

the gauges I look at most are GPS and depth.
Engine related gauges I look at are temp, oil, and fuel
only when in a restricted zone or pulling skiers/tubes do I look at the speedo and tach

However finding a tach for your outboard will be easy.

Teleflex makes a lot of inexpensive marine gauges. You can purchase them to match, or just purchase them individually. Go to their website and have a look. Make sure your trim gauge is for an OMC, as they function backwards from the Merc trim gauges.

Trim and engine rpm (tachometer) are the only two gauges that are "engine-specific". Fuel and Voltmeter are "boat' related and have nothing to do with the engine. Engine temperature and water pressure gauges are good to have but unless you actually look at them once in awhile, they just go along for the ride. Ensure the alarm system is working.

So I assume you can hook temp and water pressure to an outboard? If so how is that done? And I your speaking of the vro alarm its bypassed along with the vro. Are there other alarms? Is there oil pressure I can monitor or no?

Fitting a temp gauge to your engine is real simple, you can just undo any bolt on or near the cylinder head at the top (higher the better) and get or make asimple z bracket with a hole drilled in it. you can go buy a very cheap sender and a gauge.
the sender will have a brass end on it and you want this to touch the cylinder head, now this touching the head will earth will provide the earth for the gauge.
just clean the head of paint where sender will touch is best.
fit the gauge in the dash and simply run 1 wire all the way to the sender. another wire will go to 12 volt off your ignition. it realy is that simple.
if you have a light bulb in the gauge that can be simple extra wire from the positive or a switch of your own .

I am not sure about your engine, but later 60 and 70hp have a threaded hole at the top right for this very thing.
here is a pic of the sender on mine with a single wire to the gauges.. as the temp goes up it simply lets more current to the gauge, very simple and very efficient.

now if you want to fit a water pressure gauge as well, then this can simply be from a gauge to the tell tale fitting on the engine.
most people cannot even see the tell tale when at the driving position, so by using the fitting for a gauge is good. you use a t-piece to have both tell tale and gauge but that is not accurate.

her below is the sender attached on mine, but a z fitting can be used, note the single red wire with yellow crimped ring fitting, this is the only wire need to run from engine to gauge, the positive can be run from control box up near the dash or any other 12 volt positive.

this picture show a cheap gauge and sender from a car accessory shop, the only difference between marine and auto is the outboard temp runs lower so not exactly in the middle when running.
mine runs at cruise around 65 degree Celsius and at full throttle around 60, and 70 at idle.
the brass sender came with the gauge, but you have to get wire, very cheap item to buy.

here is a blown up picture of the sender, as long as the end of this is touching the cylinder head it will work good.
some of these come with a z fitting, if not simply make your own.

hope this helps, its a lot simpler than it sounds and take about 15 mins once the hole is cut in the dash for the gauge.

Alright thanks! i believe i saw that threaded hole on mine. thought i was missing a head bolt at first! and what gauge do you use for the water pressure? im not sure what you were talking about there. where does the tach hook up? There isnt actually oil pressure i can measure right?

you are correct in NO oil pressure.
lets start with the tacho. I would look around for a omc tacho to be honest, try to get something like new old stock, or go for a faria gauge.
first check on your engine that the battery is charging ok, if so then simply get a omc tacho and proceed to rig it up. there already wires fitted to the engine and probably in your control box waitng to be plugged to the right gauge...
Now again you will need a positive wire from the ignition (purple) and a grey wire from the engine that is the pulse wire.and you will need a negative wire.
its that simple.

here is the back of the gauge and the front of the gauge your looking for, (some of these also have a fitting for a lightbulb ) this is a omc gauge

..................................................................
you can fit a water pressure gauge to any outboard that has a tell tale easily.

you first need a gauge to put in the dash, this will simply have a small tube sticking out of the back. this you then put a 1/4 inch hose to that goes back to
the engine.
on the engine there is the tell tale pipe that has a hose that comes from the block to a fitting on the cowling.
Now some people simply cut this hose and fit a t- piece and connect the hose from the dash and the tell tale fitting so they have a tell tale at the back with a psi reading at the dash.
its a very simple thing to connect up as no wires needed just hose and a t-piece.
I prefer it not to have a t-piece so I get the correct reading of psi.. its personal preference, but a good gauge to have.

out of all the possible gauges I think the Tacho (rev counter) water temp and water pressure are the ones needed the most.
trim gauge is a waste of time as you fell whats the best trim at the time..

Well i just had an idea. ill have to check into it tomorrow, but my friends dad has an old bass boat (needs a full restore) with an 88hp evinrude( possibly either its locked up or the foot is and its stuck in gear as you cant spin the prop) But! i beleive the boat has a full set of original gauges. what are they chances they might still be okay? The trailer is also in good shape. and i could work on the motor as a tinker project. i think he last told me 300 for it all. think thats a good price?

Also. i didn't know my motor actually charged the battery? Actually i always thought all outboards didnt charge the battery. learn something new every day i guess.

I've had good luck with Teleflex gauges. A surface temp gauge is easy, as posted above. But honestly, you probably don't need anything for the current motor -- particularly if getting into another project (sounds like it might be a good one, by the way).

Let's see, think I would keep the existing gauges with the 88 if going for a restoration there. If the motor turns out to be strictly parts, you can always try to swap gauges later.

Not a project, but a parts boat. i was wondering since the gauges in the parts boat would be OMC would the tach(even though its a v4 and mines a straight 3) still work

6-pulse for both, as I recall (tachs). should fit, but look for addit. specs. Get the manufacturer of the gauge on the 88, and look for online data.

Confirmed that the motor is charging the battery. but its charging at 17volts? seems a tad high. incase it is. could i have the motor charge my second battery also?

well, battery might be flat. Could charge a second battery using a battery switch (Perko, or similar), or an isolator. Or you can just switch out batteries, making sure you don't disconnect while the engine is running -- and do not reverse polarity at any point. There's excellent advice here over on the electrical forum if wondering what and how -- might start a separate thread over there.
