Aftermarket intake part?

Hello guys, I just finished rebuilding the Solex carb on a Volvo Penta AQ125b/270. When I removed the carb from the intake, a gasket was sitting on some type of riser or flame arrestor. It cuts the throat of the intake to a half-moon shape. It then has a gasket that mates with the intake surface. The piece has a stamp that says "front" with and arrow. What the hell is this? It’s not in the Claymer or Seloc manuals. It seems that fuel would puddle on the lip of this plate and not be delivered to the cylinders. So in that case, I left it off and the motor runs fine at low to mid RPMs. I haven’t tested WOT for it is still on the trailer for a new floor is being installed. Anyway, any help is welcome! I don't want to blow myself up if indeed it is some sort of flame arrestor. Thanks guys!!! I can post a pic of it if you guys want to take a look. Thanks again!

Re: Aftermarket intake part?

It's used to help direct the flow of the air/fuel mixture into the engine. Put it back in. If you knew how a carb worked, you wouldn't worry about a "Puddle on the lip".
