Hello,
Last year I bought a 90 Chris Craft 197 with a 5.8L OMC Cobra 351. We used the boat about 2 months when we started noticing water was getting into the oil. We had to have some work done on this boat about a month before, but all that was done was the bushing that goes in between the flywheel and the drive shaft to the prop had to be replaced. We had a local guy work on the boat, he lifted the engine and did his work. After that is when we noticed milky oil. We ran it for a while and changed the oil and again it was still milky and needed to be fixed. I started breaking down the engine and when I took off the intake, I noticed a crack about 5 inches long from the thermostat housing to the inside where the oil is in the valley. I couldn't find a replacement stock intake so I bought an Edelbrock Performer Intake instead. Recently installed it and it runs like a champ, just have to adjust the carb now. Just wondered if anyone ever installed aftermarket performance parts on this engine or similar and how the outcome was.

Mike D

I have used Edlebrock carbs and manifolds on cars with great success. They make some real high quality stuff in my oppinion. I do not think it matters what type of intake you use on a marine engine. Of course, the Heads, Head Gaskets and carb are a different story.

are you running in salt water and is the engine raw water cooled? If it is that manifold won't last very long, water will eat right through aluminum, need to use cast iron...can buy a used automotive manifold at salvage yard for about $70.

I only use it in fresh water.
I don't live by the coast, so don't ever have any plans on putting it in salt water.

My neighbor has a raw water 350 volvo (20' Monterey) that has a Edelbrock Performer on it. The boats been used in the salt water (flushed after each use) for 2 years and the manifold needs replacing due to severe electrolosis damage. He's using all the zincs but that's all he gets out of them.

Don't use an auto carb on a marine engine. The marine-spec carbs have features to prevent leaks. Pay the extra $$.
