Does anyone know of an aftermarket oil injection sytem? I recall some years ago (thought it was Tempo Marine), but can't find any. They were inline systems that routed your fuel in, added oil and then output to the engine. They mounted in a rear compartment.

Re: Aftermarket Oil Injection

Still looking for a reliable system as an engineer. IMHO the oil injection system should have positive feedback that oil is going into the engine and be a ratio of oil to gas based on throttle position. Most existing systems fall short and are the source of lots of problems and engine damage. Premixing is the only sure way. Perhaps an injection system connected to the input manifold could be developed but would still need a friction measuring device (sensor) that could immediately detect the absence of oil going into the engine and shut the engine down. Patent anyone?

Rapair Inc is marketing one as a direct replacement for the Merc system when the plastic gear fails. The idea is you don't have to take the powerhead apart to remove the crank and replace the gear.

All the existing alarms plug in. It's a nice looking unit.

Good luck!

Yes, Mercury has a better system than some and even it fails as was suggested in the previous post. Nothing on the market is foolproof like premixing. It doesn't hurt a thing to pre-mix on injection motors. I know oil injection provides a big convienence factor, but is it really worth the risk? How many hoses have come off, how many horns have failed, how many gears have broken, how many diaphrams have failed..... and how many simple problems have caused catastrophic failure to those otherwise wonderful 2-cycle engines?

I have never been able to understand why oil injection has worked so well on motorcycles but not on outboards. I've owned several 2 stroke motorcycles with the injection and you have zero maintenance...nothing, nada. If memory serves right Suzuki mcy invented the oil injection system.

Re: Aftermarket Oil Injection

Maybe it's in the implementation, but even the professional motorcycle racers premix, or so I am told. Your motorcycles had a throttle controlled direct injection system and was driven by a fairly reliable gear driven injector pump. Maybe it is as close as anybody has come. That's why Sea Doo, the new owner of Bombardier has used that system for years in their snowmobiles and PWCs. Wonder what they are going to do with that terrible VRO system they got from OMC. The Sea Doo racers still choose to remove that admittedly more reliable system with a blocking plate and to premix for even more reliablility.

Re: Aftermarket Oil Injection

Thanks for your replies. I tried to find Repair Inc as mentioned above, but had no luck. I agree that premixing is safe, but the design has shortcomings. The worst condition that I ever saw a V6 Merc in was after the fuel line to cylinder 1 separated --- nothing but metal shavings left. No fuel --- no oil. The operator didn't know he was running on only 5 cylinders. I worked at a marina with a large fleet of rental ski boats and in the early 90s, we couldn't replace with anything but oil injected models. We always ran 150:1 mix in the tanks in addition to injection. Figured it was some insurance and never had an engine failure.

Re: Aftermarket Oil Injection

Missouri -
I've got a Mercury AutoBlende II that I took off of a boat I bought last spring. It was working OK when I removed it. I took it off after the boat melted a piston, but later found out the cause was the previous owners attempt to hot rod the motor by advancing the timing way beyond factory specs.
The AutoBlende has a large diaphragm that senses the fuel flow and delivers a metered amount of oil depending on the rate of flow. It is a mechanical device with no connection to the boats electric system. It has a 9 volt battery with a loud alarm horn to tell you when it is empty or when the oil flow stops. These things originally sold for about $400. It appears to be well made. I understand that Mercury only made them for a couple of years, so they obviously weren't a big commercial success. I haven't been able to find out much about it and I don't have the instruction manual. If you want one to play around with,I'd sell it cheap.
E-mail me at wakaNOSPAMtaka@charter.net. Remove the capital letters in the e-mail address. I put them in there to avoid spam.

Thanks, RowHome. I'm interested in the AutoBlend system if the price is reasonable. Can't seem to get an e-mail to you using the address you gave. It keeps bouncing back, I even cut and paste it to make sure. If you get back to this post. Let me know how to contact you.
