Aftermarket Parts - Differences in Quality, etc?

Barr, Mallory, Osco, etc.

Obviously genuine Volvo Penta parts are ideal, but they sure as hell are expensive. I'm interested in your opinion and experience with the various after market brands. I've found that some are more expensive than others (depending on the part), but is there a reason to not go with the least expensive?

It's been my experience that you get what you pay for. But, at the same time, I know there are good after market parts out there. I'm not sure I would always go with the cheapest. Some times you might find when ordering a part, say an exhaust manifold, the bolt holes might not be properly aligned. You just have to do good research on that kind of stuff.

Depends on the part and the manufacturer. Some aftermarket parts are just plain junk and others work just fine. Got something specific in mind?

Hi Guys:

I'm not a big believer in the sanctity of OEM parts. I know this point of view is a little blasphemous but after examining several parts for my old inline 6 both OEM and aftermarket I can't really see any difference except for price. I realize that guys with much more experience than me have met with other results but I would buy price every time! We don't really believe that all Mercury parts are made in the USA by union members do we?

I've used and sold all the above manifolds and any will work and last as long as the others.
