Aftermarket quality

I'm in the market for a new starter on a Yamaha 115 and have seen everything from $500+ for the OEM version, to $250 for a Taiwan one, to a Arco for $400 to a Caltric for $176.
Bought one of the Taiwan ones and returned it when the bendix didn't seem to be responsive, at least when dropping down. Very stiff.

Looking at a rebuild on the OEM but does anyone have experience with these third party units? Is it just luck of the draw. Most match the warranty of 1 year.

Thanks

Re: Aftermarket quality

I took my original in to my local autoparts store and asked them who they knew of that rebuilt starters. They referred me. The guy rebuilt it for $50. Still working great two years later.

He replaced the contacts, machined down the shaft where they touched. He said not to spin the starter for extended periods or it would be prone to overheating due to the reduced amount of material there.

Even if it only lasts a few years, better than buying a new one. Hopefully by the time the starter dies again I can replace the entire motor along with the starter.

Just noticed you were somewhat local. The name of the shop was Ken's Starter and Alternators in Sanford, FL.
